Global Population Surpasses 8 Billion, Grows by 75 Million in the Past Year

The global demographic scenario is witnessing a significant shift as the world’s population surpasses the 8 billion milestone, registering an augmentation of 75 million individuals in the preceding year. According to the latest data released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the global growth rate for the preceding year hovered just below 1%, signifying the addition of millions to the human population.

As we step into the New Year, projections from the Census Bureau provide a fascinating insight into the dynamics of global demographics. Approximately 4.3 births and two deaths are projected to take place every second globally, highlighting the delicate equilibrium between life and mortality on a worldwide scale.

In contrast, the United States experienced a more moderate growth rate of 0.53% in the past year, a figure roughly half of the global average. The country saw a significant increase of 1.7 million individuals, pushing the U.S. population to an impressive 335.8 million as we usher in the New Year.

Demographer William Frey, associated with The Brookings Institution, offers valuable insights into the potential trajectory of population growth in the United States. He suggests that if the current pace persists throughout the decade, the 2020s could carve a place in history as the slowest-growing decade in U.S. demographic records. Projections point to a growth rate of less than 4% over the ten years from 2020 to 2030. To put this into perspective, the slowest-growing decade to date occurred in the aftermath of the Great Depression in the 1930s, registering a growth rate of 7.3%.

“While growth may see a slight uptick as we move beyond the pandemic years, reaching 7.3% would still be challenging,” Frey remarked, highlighting the complex interplay of various factors influencing population dynamics.

Shifting our focus to the intricacies of the U.S. demographic scenario in 2024, the nation is set to witness a birth approximately every nine seconds, paired with a death occurring every 9.5 seconds. However, the delicate equilibrium between life and death is offset by immigration, a key determinant in sustaining the population. Net international migration is projected to contribute one person to the U.S. population every 28.3 seconds. Consequently, the combined impact of births, deaths, and net international migration is expected to augment the U.S. population by one person every 24.2 seconds, underscoring the multifaceted nature of demographic changes in the modern era.
