06 Dec Explore More Miami Art Fairs Beyond Art Basel Miami Beach
As the anticipation builds for the opening of Art Basel Miami Beach, various satellite fairs during Miami Art Week are competing for collectors’ attention in the final stretch of a busy art market calendar. From the multitude of choices available, four exceptional fairs stand out, providing a varied selection of up-and-coming art, creations that challenge gender norms, expansive installations, culinary experiences, and plenty of chances for social interaction.
AfriKin Art
AfriKin Art, a fusion of “African” and “kinship,” positions itself as “Miami’s premier contemporary Africana art fair,” aiming to showcase the ingenuity and potential of people of African origin. Founded by Alfonso Brooks, the fair in North Miami features over 30 artists presenting a wide spectrum of art and scholarship. The eighth edition of AfriKin Art pays tribute to Dr. John Henrik Clarke, an African American historian and professor, with a special section. The event features the artistic contributions of individuals such as Michael Chukes, diving into the essence of the “female spirit,” and exhibits photographic works by Delphine Diallo, a French and Senegalese artist who is reshaping portraiture with images enhanced through artificial intelligence.
NADA
The 21st installment of the non-profit New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) fair revisits Ice Palace Studios, a transformed 1920s ice plant now serving as a film production studio. The Curated Spotlight section of this year’s fair, curated by Jenée-Daria Strand of the Public Art Fund, features eight artists recognized for their exciting multimodal creative practices. Among the highlighted works are paintings by Miami artist Dustin Emory, exploring the effects of confinement, and abstract needlepoint landscapes by Azadeh Gholizadeh, drawing inspiration from the weaving traditions of Iran.
Scope Miami Beach
The 22nd edition of Scope features an impressive lineup of more than 110 exhibitors, with 70 of them being first-time participants. In collaboration with Straat, a museum of street art and graffiti in Amsterdam, Scope’s urban art program, Walls, presents the exhibition “Not So Black and White,” emphasizing nuance in a polarized world. The fair features a diverse range of artworks, including a monumental steel sculpture titled “A Blue (Collar) Horse” by BK Adams, exploring intersections between music, skateboarding, and painting. British artist Lucy Sparrow offers a novel take on the bagel shop with “Feltz Bagels,” complete with handmade felt bagels for purchase.
Untitled Art
Celebrating its 12th edition on the beach in Miami Beach, Untitled Art showcases around 160 galleries from 39 countries, presenting works by 600 artists. The fair’s curatorial focus revolves around “Gender Equality in the Arts” and “Curating in the Digital Age.” With a commitment to a balanced and inclusive artistic landscape, Untitled Art features works by artists like Richard Ayodeji Ikhide, Cindy Phenix, and Emma Talbot. The event utilizes virtual 3-D views of exhibitors’ booths with the support of its digital partner, Vortic Art. Additionally, Resy, a restaurant reservation platform, presents specially curated culinary delights by award-winning chef Stephanie Izard for VIP guests at the beach.
