PituRooms: Salatiga’s Unique Gem Hotel

In Salatiga, Central Java, a fascinating project is making headlines as it competes for the title of the “world’s skinniest hotel.” Created by Indonesian architect Ary Indra, PituRooms goes beyond breaking records; it embodies a heartfelt initiative to spotlight his hometown on the global stage.

Ary Indra’s story begins in Salatiga, where he grew up before becoming an architect in bustling cities like Jakarta and Singapore. Motivated by a commitment to contribute to his origins, he discovered an overlooked plot of land with unconventional dimensions. Unfazed, he recognized it as a chance to turn this overlooked space into something extraordinary.

PituRooms, named after the Javanese word for “seven,” is a slender marvel, measuring a mere 2.8 meters (9 feet) in width across five floors. Each of the seven rooms, featuring a double bed and compact bathroom, showcasing imaginative design featuring local artwork, each floor exudes a distinctive ambiance.

Officially opening its doors in December 2022, PituRooms is more than accommodation; it’s a catalyst for a new tourism era involving local communities. Ary Indra’s vision extends beyond overcoming technical challenges in hospitality norms; he aims to reshape the industry mindset accustomed to superlatives like “tallest” and “biggest.”

Salatiga, often overshadowed by more popular Indonesian tourist destinations, boasts a rich history, a tolerant atmosphere, and excellent infrastructure. Although PituRooms has predominantly drawn Indonesian visitors, Ary Indra sees it as the inaugural project among numerous others that will spotlight Salatiga’s varied charm.

Despite being the “skinniest” hotel, PituRooms turns limitations into strengths, offering guests a unique experience of micro-space living. Apart from the narrow accommodations, a rooftop restaurant boasting panoramic views of Mount Merbabu becomes a shared space for locals to relish.

As PituRooms continues to welcome guests, Ary Indra plans to expand its role beyond accommodation, envisioning it as a hub for cultural events, art exhibitions, and community programming—an integral part of Salatiga’s evolving narrative. PituRooms transcends being a mere resting place; it embodies resilience, creativity, and a celebration of the unique charm that small towns, such as Salatiga, share with the world.
